Doesn't bug me if they portray it well. If it's just another bundle of stereotypes, though, ugh.
Yep. Let Eric McCormack (McCormick?) be an example of the good.
*notices own icon* Oh! And Amber Benson and Alyson Hannigan. :-)
Glad to hear I'm not alone in thinking there's nothing wrong with it. : ) I've heard that it upsets some people. I don't get that.
Me neither. I didn't know how widespread the opinion was, though. I'm still new to all this.
It's only been about a year and a half since I found I wasn't completely straight. I still know gay culture almost exclusively through the media.
I think that as long as people are able to play the chacter well it shouldn't matter. It's just another part of a character that an actor would have to portray. Straight actors have been able to play gay roles very effectivly over the past several decades and gay actors have been able to play straight roles effectivley over hundreds of centruries. As long as they don't fall to stereotypes there is no reason people couldn't play both.
I agree. It shouldn't matter, but I've heard some gay people are offended by it. They think straight actors are making fun of them, and they think a gay actor shouldn't be forced to "play it straight" and pretend to be something they're not. The offended people don't seem to realize that the actors are ACTING. I suspect Anthony Hopkins isn't really a cannibal, but folks don't raise a fuss over him portraying one.
I am a cannibal and I, for one, am very appalled! That Damn Hopkins ruined it for good upstanding citizens like us.
I agree with what you're saying. I think that's some of the reason why gay actors don't come out, they're tired of 1) being typecast and 2) not being taken seriously when they try to take on straight roles.
Tis silly. *nod* I'm gay and I, for one, love it when GOOD straight actors play gay. Like Chita Rivera's recent appreance on Will & Grace playing an older lesbain (Chita's like in 70's btw even though she looks in her 40's) The woman is a broadway legend and I love her. So for someone that great to be playing a lesbain even if it is only a one-shot guest part. I'm happy!
And Portia De Rossi plays Nell in Ally MacBeal, straight character, lesbain actress... Of course she's played loads of other straight rolls.
I don't know if I can remain friends with the likes of a cannibal. I mean, how can I trust that you won't try to eat me when my back is turned? Huh? All you cannibals want to eat me, I'm just sure of it!
Psha! Don't flatter yourself! You're just prejudice against us Cannibals. I would go to another Cannibal Pride Parade but I fear of what happened last year. Only three people made it out alive. But, damn, that Rabbi was tasty!
No offense to any real cannibals. Ahem...
I don't have a problem with it either way. It's all just acting. (Look at Rock Hudson...I thought he was heterosexual when I was a kid, seeing his films with Doris Day. Like most of America, I didn't know he was gay until he disclosed he had AIDS.)
I know this community has been dead for about a year but I might as well answer this haha.
Look at RENT (one of my personal favorites). The movie and the show, the gay/bisexual actors play straight characters and the straight actors play gay/bisexual/transvestite characters.
It's all good.
